Wax paper, cardboard and candles
The waxed paper is used mainly in the food industry to wrap and preserve the merchandise like chewing gum, meat, sausages, fish, etc. Its manufacture is based on applying paraffin, microcrystalline wax or polyethylene wax on paper.
The same process can be carried out on cardboard, making it impervious to water and steam and so it can be used in agriculture cartons, since fruits and vegetables contain moisture and, if not paraffined, that could damage the box.
There are various methods for making candles such as dipping the wick in a bath of wax or a mixture of products repeatedly until it acquires the desired thickness. Furthermore, the raw material is usually melted and deposited in moulds next to the wick.
By adjusting the formulation of raw materials, you can grant different properties to the candles, be they procession candles or decorative candles.

Polyethylene waxes
Used to give a hard outer layer to the candles due to the high melting point of these waxes. Different grades according to their viscosity, penetration/hardness and melting point.
Synthetic paraffin
Product totally free of oil, which allows the candle to burn without the production of smoke. It does not become rancid or yellow. Used to give a very thin and hard final layer to the candles. In addition, it disperses colour and fragrances better than standard paraffins and waxes.
Paraffin
Base ingredient for candles. Also used for coating paper and cardboard for waxing and subsequent use in the food industry, for example. Diversity of melting points and oil content.
Hydrocarbon resins
These resins can be mixed with standard paraffins to coat cardboard, which offers strength and waterproofing. We have C5, C9, C5/C9, Hydrogenated and DCPD.
Microcrystalline wax
Its use in the manufacture of candles allows to raise the melting point of the mixture, hardens the candle and gives it elasticity, preventing it from cracking and breaking. This wax is also used to paraffin paper in contact with food.
