Activated carbon

Betaquimica S.A. offers a wide variety of steam-activated carbons for a broad range of applications. The carbons are from both mineral of vegetable sources and can be served in granular, pellet or powder form according to customers’ needs.


Our most typical grades of carbon are the 12x40 (0.425-1.7mm) and 8x30 (0.6-2.36mm) grades in both mineral and coconut shell. In drinking water, waste water and industrial water treatment these products can be used for the following applications:

  • The adsorption of the organic precursors to trihalomethanes previous to chlorination or the adsorption of THM after chlorination.
  • Pesticide removal.
  • Dechlorination.
  • Acid-washed grades for low inorganic applications.
  • The elimination of taste and odour.
  • The adsorption of oils, certain solvents and other hydrocarbons.
  • Silver impregnated activated carbon to prevent biological contamination when the filter beds are not working, ideal for domestic taps.
  • Colour removal.

Our grades fulfil the EN:12915-1 European Normative for use in drinking water treatment.

The activated carbon used is gas and air treatment is usually of a larger granular or pellet size than carbon intended for water treatment. This application has the advantage of being able to work with carbons which have been impregnated with different compounds in order to increase their efficiency in removing unwanted vapours, gases or odours via chemisorption. The following are some typical applications:

  • Adsorption of volatile organic compounds from the air using non-impregnated activated carbon either in coarse grain (4x8 mesh) or in pellets of 3mm or 4mm.
  • De-dusted grades for highly sensitive applications.
  • Hydrogen sulphide, the typical rotten-egg odour from rubbish dumps, sewers or waste water plants can be removed with activated carbon impregnated in alkaline materials such as NaOH, KOH etc.
  • Potassium iodide impregnated carbon also has added efficiency against mercaptans and other sulphurous compounds.
  • Ammonia odours or other alkaline vapours can be removed using acid- impregnated grades of activated carbon.
  • Other specialised impregnations can work against formaldehyde and mercury.


Personal respirators and gas masks can only use highly-controlled specifically-impregnated activated carbons which have been officially approved for their particular application. Betaquimica can offer the full range of these carbons. Below are some examples of the most typical grades:

  • Type A: Used to adsorb organic substances with a boiling point higher than 65º C.
  • Type B: Used to block highly specific organic vapours as defined by the manufacturer.
  • Type E: To prevent the respiration of sulphur dioxide and other acidic gases.
  • Type K: To adsorb ammonia and organic ammonia.

Other specialised types of activated carbon are used to trap mercury and others for organic substances with boiling points of < 65º C. Please consult Betaquimica regarding any of these specialised grades.
